Spice exports surge 31% in April to Dec
The spice export from the country has registered a 31% increase in value to touch Rs 2335 crore during the April to December period of 2006. As compared to this the value of exports stood at Rs 1781 crore.
The country exported around 250528 tonnes of spices during the April to December period. In dollar terms the exports stood at US $512 million, an increase of 27%.
The major item in the spice export basket during the period under review was pepper which increased by 100% in value to Rs 203 crore. The increase in quantity terms was 65% to touch a level of 20,000 tonnes.
Though the export of chilli fell by 3% in quantity, it registered a 44% increase in value terms to Rs 440 crore. The cumin export saw the highest increase of 194% in value to Rs 166 crore. In quantity terms it increased to 22000 tonnes registering a growth of 199%.
Celery, fennel and fenugreek fell in quantity terms though the latter two increased in value terms. Small cardamom exports fell by 29% in value to Rs 12.6 crore and 32% in quantity to 385 tones. Garlic saw a fall in exports during the period under review.
Among the value added spices curry powder and mint products achieved moderate gains while spice oils and oleoresin export fell marginally.
