Spice export growing, to touch $1 billion in 2007-08
India's spices export is growing at an accelerated pace and is expected to touch golden mark of $1 billion in 2007-08, experts stated.
"Exports during the year is growing at an accelerated pace and we are optimistic to touch the golden mark of $1 billion in 2007-08. The next ten years will see spice exports touching yet another golden milestone of $10 billion," Spices board chairman V J Kurien said addressing delegates for the ongoing ninth World Spice Congress which got underway in Goa yesterday.
"Challenges are many but the relentless efforts of spice growers and exporters scripted the success story of Indian spice industry," he added.
Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh inaugurated the three-day conference which has 155 delegates from 36 countries besides 260 Indian delegates participating in it.
The conference intends to showcase India's capabilities and potential in spices to the world community.
Talking about the success story of spice exports, Kurien said the industry has achieved phenomenal growth in export.
"In the last 10 years, spices exports from India made a quantum leap from 2,25,000 mt valued at $350 million in 1996-97 to an export of 3,75,000 mt valued at approximately $800 million in 2006-07," he said.
