Soyameal exports up by 4 pc in Oct-Dec 2007

Exports grew at 12,53,102 tons during October-December 2007 as against 12,00,651 tons in the year-ago period.

NEW DELHI: The country's soyameal exports in the first three months of the current season, which started in October 2007, increased marginally by 4.37 per cent as higher freight rates and logistical constraints hampered sales.

"Exports would have been higher had the problem of availability of rakes not been there and cargo freight rates would have been softer," Indore-based Soyabean Processors Association Coordinator Rajesh Agrawal said.

Exports grew at 12,53,102 tons during October-December 2007 as against 12,00,651 tons in the year-ago period.

Agrawal said exports could have touched 20 lakh tons in October-December 2007 had there been adequate infrastructure and logistics facilities. The oil year runs from October to September. Soyameal is used mainly as poultry feed.

He pointed out that crushing process has got postponed as soyameal is lying at ports and godowns. Freight rates to a few markets such as Japan also rose from 35 dollars to 50 dollars a tonne, he said.

When asked about the overall export estimates for the entire season, Agrawal said: "We are still hopeful that exports will be between 40-45 lakh tons in 2007-08 season" as compared to 36-37 lakh tons in the previous year.

The demand for Indian soyameal in overseas markets are likely to be good so there would not be much problem in exporting the estimated quantity, he noted.

Exports of soyameal during December 2007 declined by 7.37 per cent at 5,51,382 tons against 5,95,283 tons in the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry body attributed non-availability of railway rakes for moving the goods to the ports as major factor for decline in exports during last month.

During October-December 2007, the major export markets were Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Indonesia.

Exports to Vietnam, Japan and Korea jumped significantly while there was a huge drop in exports to Indonesia.

"Overall, the thrust of exports have been to east and South-east Asian countries," SOPA said.

The data has been collected and compiled by SOPA based on the information received from members, port authorities and other agencies. The data does not include exports to Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh by rail or road.
