Shipping links, IBSA pact get Cabinet okay

NEW DELHI: Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Brasilia for the IBSA Summit this month, government decided to sign a trilateral agreement to promote shipping links between India, South Africa and Brazil.
The Cabinet gave its approval for signing the agreement among the three countries on merchant shipping, other maritime transport related matters and its ratification.
The trilateral agreement for promotion of shipping links is scheduled for signature during the IBSA summit at Brasilia on September 13 in which the Prime Minister would be participating. Promoting direct shipping links between India, South Africa and Brazil was important from New Delhi’s point of view, an official spokesperson told reporters.
The Cabinet has also given approval for signing of two agreements between central government and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) for setting up an international airport at Devanhalli in Bangalore. The approval has been given after incorporating the changes in the concession agreement that was signed in July 2004.
The amended agreement will result in construction of a bigger airport than it was earlier planned in order to accommodate the rapid increase in air passengers. In another decision, the Cabinet approved outsourcing, up to 20 million tonne per year, of coal production from the Bharatpur Opencast Mines in Mahanadi Coalfields Limited by floating tenders for the process.
The CCEA also approved simultaneous floating of tenders to outsource incremental overburden removal corresponding to 9 MT additional coal production for longer duration (for 10 years) for effecting economies due to life-time utilisation of the equipment deployed by outsourcing agencies.
Pondicherry-based Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) will be converted into an autonomous institution and placed at par with AIIMS and PGIMER, Chandigarh.
