Schemes to be launched for promoting ornamental fish export
Marine Products Export Development Auhtority is all set to boost the trade with the launch of financial assistance schemes to set up export-oriented ornamental fish breeding units.
Under the scheme, financial assistance would be extended for setting up small, medium and large scale export-oriented ornamental fish breeding units, Pramod, State Co-ordinator, Ornamental Fish development, MPEDA said in a statement here today.
One medium and four large scale units were being set up in the state, under the scheme, this financial year, he said.
MPEDA has also launched a scheme for setting up ornamental fish marketing societies.
Ornamental fish sector in the country was a small but vibrant segment with potential for tremendous growth and large scale employment generation, Pramod said.
However, the sector in Karnataka was less developed compared to other places like Chennai, Kolkota and Kerala.
Lack of awareness among the public and lack of technical information and funding required to establish breeding units were the main reasons for this, he said.
To overcome these bottlenecks, MPEDA was planning to create mass awareness programmes in every district of the state with the support of locals NGOs and fisheries department.
