A visiting Indian business delegation has advocated the need for a closer cooperation between the Small and Medium Enterprises of India and Britain, which would be beneficial for each other.

LONDON: A visiting Indian business delegation has advocated the need for a closer cooperation between the Small and Medium Enterprises of India and Britain, which would be beneficial for each other.

Speaking at a meeting convened by British-India Parliamentary Committee here, the president of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PHDCCI) Sushma Berlia said, "there could be much more engagement at the levels of SMEs."

Berlia, who is leading a 20-member delegation, also said SMEs in India accounted for 45 per cent of the GDP. The meeting in the House of Lords was presided over by Committee chairman Ashok Kumar MP.

Present on the occasion included Lord Swraj Paul, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, Lord Navnit Dholakia, Piara Singh Khabra MP and leader of the Conservative Party Peter Luff.

The delegation which arrived here on Monday on a week long visit will go to Birmingham, Dublin and Belfast before returning home.

Earlier, Lord Paul has hosted a party for the visiting delegation at the Attlee Room of the House of Lords. Among those present included Baroness Amos, leader of the House of Lords.

Referring to the rapid economic stride made by India during the last one decade, Khabra said India has now been recognized as an economic power.


Ashok Kumar noted that NRIs in the UK had made all round progress and Lord Swraj Paul is a "living example of leader of our community."

Kumar said both British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown have passionately demonstrated their desire to improve UK's relations with India and they have highly recognized the achievements of Indians in this country.

Answering a question, Peter Luff said Indian companies were welcome to establish their units in the UK. During the last four years, 480 Indians companies were operating here.

Noting that there was no incident of racism, he said a call centre set up by HCL in Belfast has become very popular.

The delegation included Sanjay Bhatia, Vice President, PHDCCI and Managing Director of Hindustan Tin Works Ltd, Ram Prakash Bagai, Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh, P K Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of the Malt Company (India) Ltd, Mohit Jain, President, Gurgaon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Arun Dhandhania, Chairman and Managing Director of the Mewar Sugar Mills Ltd and Prof Bibek Debroy, Secretary General of PHDCCI.
