Pakistan Minister to talk trade with India Inc at Taj Hotel

Business and trade will top Pakistan's agenda when Makhdoom Amin Faheem meets representatives of India Inc

MUMBAI: Business and trade will top Pakistan's agenda when Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Faheem meets representatives of India Inc in a two-day engagement that begins tomorrow at Taj Mahal hotel, one of the sites of the brazen 26/11 terror attack.

In a move loaded with symbolism, Faheem will kick off his four-day visit to the country, the first by a Pakistani Commerce Minister in 35 years, from the Taj, India's icon of hospitality, which was seared and scarred by huge fires that engulfed its famous domes three years ago as 10 gunmen from across the border laid siege to the financial capital.

Thirty-one people, including foreigners, were killed in a welter of explosions and firing by the terrorists at the hotel, a favourite haunt of kings, heads of state and legendary artistes.

Painstakingly restored to outshine even its former glory after the devastating terror onslaught, the 108-year-old luxury hotel played host to US President Barack Obama in November last year when he chose to begin his India visit from Mumbai.

"That the Pakistani Commerce Minister is beginning his four-day visit from Mumbai shows the seriousness that Islamabad accords to trade ties with India," said an official of industry chamber FICCI, the organiser of the event.

On the first day of his visit, Faheem, leading a 70-member official-cum-business delegation, will stay at the Taj and hold a round-table with select businessmen and potential Indian investors.
