BHUBANESWAR: The North-east is home to 1,331 species of orchids, which could add to its economy, according to an orchidologist.

Countries like Thailand and Malaysia were making money by marketing their orchid wealth, said orchidologist Sarat Misra, whose book "Orchids of India - a glimpse" was released by Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today.

Mishra, an engineer by profession, who studied orchids for nearly three decades, said, "as many as 1141 texa under 166 genera was recorded way back in 1994."

He pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh had created an orchid sanctuary at Seesa, but regretted no other state government or the central government had done so.

His book deals with geographical regions, habitats and distribution, morphology, evolution, flowering behaviour, genetic classification, specialized groups and other details on orchids.
