Onion export falls to 5-year low

In September 2002, the onion export was 26,619 tons while it was 1.02 lakh tons in the same month in 2006. The volume of export was higher in September month every year between 2003 and 2006 compared to 40,490 tons of 2007.

NEW DELHI: India's onion exports fell to a record low of 40,490 tons in September this year, as the government hiked export price of the commodity to discourage overseas sale to curb rising prices in the domestic market.

In September 2002, the onion export was 26,619 tons while it was 1.02 lakh tons in the same month in 2006. The volume of export was higher in September month every year between 2003 and 2006 compared to 40,490 tons of 2007.

The total onion exports during the first half (April- September) of the current fiscal fell to 3.84 lakh tonnes against 6.05 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Nashik-based National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation.

Government agencies which are authorised to undertake export of onion have increased the Minimum Export Price (MEP) several times in the last few months.

In September, the MEP was raised by USD 50 a tonne to all destinations.
