One-third north Indian cos affected by dumping of cheap goods
One-third of firms located in north India have been impacted due to dumping of products from countries like China, a survey on Thursday said.
The dumping of goods in the market by way of under-priced imports has become a serious problem in sectors including sanitary ware, pharmaceuticals and food products, PHDCCI survey said.
"About 32 per cent of our respondents are severely impacted by dumping of goods by the foreign suppliers," it said. However, PHD Chamber did not mention about the number of companies covered in the survey.
"Industry feels that the low-priced imports are not only impacting the country's domestic market but also affecting their market abroad," PHD Chamber President Satish Bagrodia said.
Besides China, some Asean and South African nations are dumping products at low prices in India as there is recession in the US and European markets, the chamber said.
It further said that dumping is threatening vulnerable sections of industry, particularly small and medium enterprises who have suffered financial losses.
Industry supports the recent anti-dumping investigations initiated by the government to protect Indian industry from influx of cheap imports, it said.
As per a WTO report, India initiated maximum anti-dumping cases during July-December 2008.
