One District One Product plan: pencils from Pulwama, wine from Nashik

The Ministry of Commerce has developed a strategy to expand and hone special products that each district produces across the country.

The One District One Product plan doesn’t do away with traditionally popular products, but in fact manages to include new ones. For example, Darjeeling tea is obviously still on the list, however, a new addition would be pencils from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

However, a few surprises have come up in the list of 106 products like, LED bulbs in Karnataka’s Chitradurga, wine from Nashik and capacitors and integrated circuit boards from Mysuru.


The Indian government is clearly looking to expand on the exports basket. Product diversification seems to be at the core of achieving the $400 billion export target set by the Commerce Ministry.

Invest India is working on this project and is creating a list that includes all 739 districts, and is helping these districts produce products of better quality. A source said to TOI, that turmeric exporters were told to cut and not grind the product as it would retain more curcumin. Besides that, Italian buyers are being contacted to ensure superior quality of Kolhapuri chappals.

Popular universities like IIT, IIM, NIFT are all being roped into the project so as to achieve better productivity, improve the supply chain and have minimalist technology without disturbing the traditional ecosystem. Efforts are also being made to put them on e-commerce platforms.
