MMTC to import 5,000 tonnes of pulses from Myanmar

NEW DELHI: State-run trading firm MMTC has invited bids for import of 5,000 tonnes of toor whole lemon from Myanmar, to be delivered by May.

Bids will close on April 28 and the decision on the tender will be taken by May 4, the company has said on its website.

Pulses grown in the 2009 crop year in Myanmar should be imported. One lot of 2,500 tonnes should be delivered at the Mumbai port and another lot of 2,500 tonnes at Kakinada or Chennai port, MMTC said.

In another tender, the trading firm has invited bids for the sale of 4,000 tonnes of dunpeas. Bids will close on April 27 and the decision on the tender will be taken on the same day.

Dunpeas are lying at Tuticorin and a bidder should quote for minimum quantity of 250 tonnes, it said.

India imports pulses through public trading agencies like MMTC, STC, PEC and co-operative major NAFED as output is lower than the demand. The country is estimated to produced 142 lakh tonnes of pulses in the 2008-09 crop year, while the domestic demand is around 170-180 lakh tonnes.
