Manipur likely to ban import of food items, oil from Myanmar

The Manipur government is mulling a ban on the import of food items and edible oil from Myanmar not because of political reasons.

NEW DELHI: The Manipur government is mulling a ban on the import of food items and edible oil from Myanmar not because of political reasons but after people in the northeastern state fell ill after reportedly consuming "unauthorised" eatables from that country.

"We're discussing the matter seriously and once test results arrive, we will certainly take necessary measures," said Manipur's Food and Civil Supplies Minister Yumkham Erabot.

The state government had collected samples of food items made from edible oil from Myanmar and sent them for comprehensive tests after there were reports of people falling ill due to the contaminated snacks and food.

"Now we're trying to send the samples to nearest food laboratories for testing," Erabot was quoted as saying by Mizzima News, a newspaper published by Myanmarese in exile here.

Erabot along with state officials visited the border town of Moreh to oversee the situation and collect samples of food items for tests.

Following the opening of border trade between the two countries in 1995, Myanmar-made snacks and other items have flooded major markets in Manipur.
