Local demand helps floriculture offset export loss

PUNE: The domestic floriculture industry is growing at an annual rate of 15-20%, propelled by demand from urban centres, but the countrys floriculture exports are falling.

According to the latest export trends from the DG of Foreign Trade, floriculture export, 2007-08 has dropped in value terms by a little over 42%, to $83.67 million from previous years $144.40 million. In rupee terms, the fall is steeper, at just over 48%, Rs 652 crore to Rs 338 crore.

Indias domestic flower and plant market, now valued at over Rs 1,000 crore is a Rs 10,000 crore business opportunity, according to Indian Flowers and Ornamental Plants Welfare Associations president, a non-profit promotion body, S Jafar Naqvi.

Aiming to focus attention on industry, the 4th International Flora Expo 2008, along with 3rd International Landscape and Gardening Expo 2008 and International Florist & Floral Art Expo 2008 will be held in New Delhi, September 26 to 28.

Mr Naqvi pointed to the mega floriculture export units which have closed down in the Pune and Bangalore region while the new units have come up are smaller in size. In the Pune region, for instance, he said, out of 26 big units which were functioning earlier, only 10 or 11 are in business now.

The Talegaon Floriculture park, which started with much promise allotting land to nearly 100 companies, only 25-30 small units are operating because of labour shortage and other problems.
