Lapang wants Bangladesh door opened

Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang today asked the Centre to intensify efforts to commence the bus service from Shillong to Dhaka and provide transit access through Bangladesh for the state's produces and imports.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang today asked the Centre to intensify efforts to commence the bus service from Shillong to Dhaka and provide transit access through Bangladesh for the state's produces and imports.

According to an official statement here, Lapang, while addressing a meeting convened by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukerjee on the "Look East" Policy at New Delhi, said the immediate area of international interface for Meghalaya was with Bangladesh.

"The infrastructure in the state for trade is however inadequate and must be augmented," he said, adding "The government of India should transform the national highways and roads and upgrade the airports at Umroi and Baljek".

He suggested the alternative rail road skirting the southern border of Meghalaya should be taken up for survey.

The Chief Minister said tourism would benefit from doing away with restrictive practices for foreign tourist such as the reporting requirement on their arrival. He wanted a diversification of cultural interface through visits of cultural troupes and the opening of a tourist office at Dhaka.

Lapang also wanted the setting up of a centre for excellence for linguistics at Shillong where South East Asian language along with English can be taught, the statement said.
