Kerala wants Centre to stop fish import

Kerala asks the Centre to reconsider its decision to allow import of certain varieties of fish under the India-European Free Trade Agreement.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has asked the Centre to reconsider its decision to allow import of certain varieties of fish under the India-European Free Trade Agreement, Fisheries Minister S Sarma said.

The LDF government had written to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath to exclude certain kind of fish from the list, considering its harmful fallout on the traditional fishery sector in states like Kerala, Sarma said in a written reply in the assembly on Monday.

The list of fish to be imported under the pact included such common varieties caught by traditional fishermen like sardine, mackerel and herring, he added.
