JSG report on feasibility of India-Australia FTA

The joint study group set up by India and Australia to examine the feasibility of a FTA between them is likely to submit its report by end of this year.

NEW DELHI: The joint study group set up by India and Australia to examine the feasibility of a Free Trade Agreement between them is likely to submit its report by end of this year.

The study group was set up to explore the possibility of a trade pact between the two countries. The government is expecting the report by the end of 2008, an official release said on Monday.

In a meeting between Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath and Western Australia's Deputy Premier Eric Ripper here, the two sides agreed to take steps to further boost bilateral cooperation.

Australia is India's 10th largest merchandise trading partner, with Western Australia accounting for nearly half of the total trade.

Considering the increasing trade volume with Western Australia, Nath said India would also consider establishing its Consulate General in Perth as has been done by countries like China, Japan, the US and Malaysia. Western Australia has established investment and trade offices in Mumbai and Chennai.
