Indo-Bangla summit for boosting trade

AGARTALA: In order to boost trade between Bangladesh and India's north-eastern states, a business summit will be held here by the end of this year with business leaders from both the countries, official sources said here on Wednesday.

The decision was taken yesterday in a meeting chaired by the Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DONER), Mani Shaankar Aiyer, which was attended by the Secretary General of Indian Chambers of Commerce (ICC) Rajib Thakur and representatives of different chambers of commerce of north eastern states including Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Assam and Bangladesh.

Tripura minister for Industries and Commerce, Jiten Chowdhury said all the participants including Aiyer preferred Agartala to be the venue for the proposed business summit because Tripura is close to Bangladesh and has good infrastructure for such a summit.

Chowdhury said Tripura can be the gateway for trade and commerce between north-east and Bangladesh, but for this facilities like land custom stations in both sides should be developed, roads in Bangladesh from Brahmanbaria, a district town to Agartala should be widened, visa systems should be liberalised and Bangladesh government should allow Indian traders to use their sea and river ports including Chittagong and Ashuganj.
