A protest erupted at a global AIDS conference Tuesday over India's compliance with WTO drug patent rules which critics charge could leave the country short of HIV medicines.

TORONTO: A protest erupted at a global AIDS conference Tuesday over India's compliance with WTO drug patent rules which critics charge could leave the country short of HIV medicines.

Almost 100 protestors shouted "Life before profit" and "Big pharma quit India" as they paraded through the convention centre hosting thousands of delegates at the 16th International AIDS Conference.

Anjali Gopalan of the non-profit NAZ Foundation based in New Delhi asked the Indian government to reverse the law introduced in January 2005 as part of efforts to honor World Trade Organisation (WTO) commitments. "If we cannot have access to generic drugs, a lot of people are going to die. We can't afford for people to die when drugs are there," she said, adding
