India's tea import bill goes up
Tea shipments during the first four months of 2011, fell by 24 per cent to 50.98 million kg from 66.75 million kg in the year-ago period.
C.S. Bedi, chairman of Indian Tea Association said: "It is good that imports have come down. Generally cheap teas are imported and are blended with Indian teas for rexport. The imported taes are not marketed in India." The countries from where teas are imported are Nepal, Kenya, Argentina, Iran among others.
India's tea production increased marginally to 68.76 million kg in April as against 68.24 million kg in the same month last year due to fall in output in Assam and South India. Tea production in Assam -- which produces around half of country's total output -- fell by 3 per cent to 37.02 million kg as compared to 38.17 kg in the year-ago period according to Tea Board.
Likewise, production of the brew in South India fell by 4% to 19.31 million kg as against 20.19 million kg in the corresponding period of the previous year. During January-April period of 2011 calendar year, the tea output of India -- the world''s second largest producer -- went up marginally to 163.16 million kg from 162.30 million kg in the corresponding period of 2010.
Tea exports, however, declined by 11% in April this year to 11.35 million kg from 12.76 million kg in March, 2010. Tea shipments during the first four months of 2011, fell by 24 per cent to 50.98 million kg from 66.75 million kg in the year-ago period.
