NEW DELHI: India's exports to the US by sea-route rose to 14.19 billion dollars in 2007 from 12.64 billion dollars in the previous year, the Parliament was informed today.

However, the growth rate in sea-route export declined last year to 12.21 per cent from 16.74 per cent in 2006, Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

GARLIC: In another reply, Ramesh said garlic bulbs imported from Pakistan were infected from pest and were recommended for deportation.

"Recently 14 consignments of garlic bulbs imported from Pakistan arrived in Amritsar from December 12, 2007 to January 1, 2008. On sample testing of the consignment, it was found that all these were infected with quarantine pest. these were recommended for deportation/destruction," he said.

EUROPEAN FTA: Ramesh also said Switzerland, as part of European Free Trade Association (EFTA), had proposed to establish an India-EFTA Joint Study Group (JSW) to examine measures to promote bilateral trade and investment flows and also to explore the possibility of a bilateral broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement.

Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein are members of the EFTA.
