NEW DELHI: Indian industry supports Australian candidate Francis Gurry as Director General of World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Federation of Indian Export Organisations said on Friday.

The election for the post in UN's body on Intellectual Property, WIPO, is scheduled to be held this month.

During the meeting between Gurry and R K Dhawan, Chairman FIEO (Northern Region), Dhawan protested against the allegations being made by the developed countries on India's failure to protect its Intellectual Properties.

He said over a period of time the industry in India has matured and was fully aware of Intellectual Property Rights and as per the recently released figures of the United Nations over 90,000 applications are received by the Indian patent registry for patentable inventions every year.

Gurry said it was important to protect India's traditional knowledge and also its intellectual resources on proven medicines.

He added that it was in the interest of WIPO and the country to have a direct WIPO presence in Delhi.
