India wants better connectivity with Bangladesh

India wants better connectivity with Bangladesh as part of the expanding economic cooperation between the two countries for the successful implementation of the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA).

KOLKATA: India wants better connectivity with Bangladesh as part of the expanding economic cooperation between the two countries for the successful implementation of the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA).

"Better connectivity within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is necessary if we want the success of SAFTA," Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty told PTI in an interview here.

With its buoyant economy, India would like its neighbours to be part of the economic resurgence so that trade and commerce could flourish in the SAARC region, he said.

"With a new India rising, we want Bangladesh to be part of it," Chakravarty, who was here in connection with the inaugural run of the 'Moitree Express', said.

Asked about Bangladesh's problem of identity vis-a-vis its relations with its large neighbour, Chakravarty said, "A poor neighbour syndrome is a liability which is why we want an integration of markets, connectivity and communication with Bangladesh."

He said the previous Khaleda Zia-led Bangladesh National Party (BNP) government had maintained 'an arm's length posture with India', but the present caretaker government was "more pragmatic and had extended its hand to boost bilateral cooperation in different areas."

Efforts were on to iron out problem areas, including trade imbalance, non-tariff barriers, water sharing and security concerns, he added.
