India to export 10,000 tons of potatoes to Sri Lanka
India has secured a order to export to 10,000 tons of potatoes to Sri Lanka, an official of a leading importers trade body in Colombo said.

COLOMBO: India has secured a order to export to 10,000 tons of potatoes to Sri Lanka, an official of a leading importers trade body here said.
"Due to high demand for Indian potato in Sri Lanka we decided to import 10,000 tonnes from India," S P Swamy, President of Essential Commodities Importers said.
While India would be exporting 10,000 tons of potatoes, Pakistan has received an order to supply 20,000 tonnes of the vegetable to the Island Nation.
"We decided to import greater quantity of 20,000 tonnes of potato from Pakistan due to price difference as the one quoted by Indian suppliers are higher," Swamy said, adding Sri Lanka would look for higher potato imports from India once the prices come down.
According to an analyst, potato prices in India remain high during the October-November period due to the lean season along with limited availability of stocks in cold storages during these months.
Potato production in India is estimated to go up by 4-5 million tonnes to 26-28 million tonnes in 2007 due to higher acreage.
According to the forecast by traders and analysts, India can expect a good harvest in potato production in the next three months.
Purchases of the new crop by processors would also be substantial as potato prices are low.
Potato exporting states like Uttar Pradesh have taken steps such as hiring cold storages near Tuticorin and Mumbai in the recent years to boost potato exports.
