'India should not look at flip side of globalisation'

Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen says India should promote free trade and reduce agriculture subsidies to ensure economic growth to remove poverty.

BANGALORE: Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday said India should not look at the 'flip side' of globalisation but promote free trade and reduce agriculture subsidies to ensure economic growth to remove poverty.

"If we look at the flip side of globalisation, we will deteriorate in competitiveness. A country like India must continue to reduce agriculture subsidies and promote free trade to ensure economic growth and removal of poverty", he said, while interacting with students of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He also called for establishing a global finance mechanism to transfer eco-friendly technology among nations for sustained economic growth combined with ecological development

To a query on the feasibility of Climate Change Agreement to be discussed at the UN Congress on Climate Change next year, he said economic growth must be combined with sustainable ecological development and energy efficiency.

"This can be done by transfer of eco-friendly technology among nations and for such transfer, there is a need to establish a global finance mechanism", he said.

In the last 25 years, Danish economic growth has been 75 per cent with energy consumption remaining zero, he pointed out.
