NEW DELHI: India on Thursday said trade basket with Finland needs to be expanded to include sectors like energy, civil aviation, financial services and science and technology.

In a meeting with visiting Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen here, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said the two sides should increase cooperation in the field of renewable and clean development mechanism, forestry, IT, environment, air services, ports, shipping, culture and tourism.

"Both the governments need to encourage cooperation in new areas and sectors and widen the trade basket beyond a few products such as ready-made garments, machinery and electronic goods," Nath said, adding that India's human resource base can be combined with Finnish technology and investment.

He further said India looked forward to an early conclusion of the comprehensive trade and investment agreement with the European Union (EU) as such pacts provide building blocks for successful economic relationship.

On the multilateral front, Nath said India remains committed to a rule-based trading system and is engaged with member countries of the World Trade Organisation for an early conclusion of the Doha Round.

Trade between India and Finland during 2006-07 was 804 million dollars as against 782 million dollars in 2005-06. Main items of export to Finland are drugs, fine chemicals, coffee, machinery and instruments, while Finnish exports constitute electronic goods, machinery, computer software, paper board and transport equipments.
