India says hopes to sign FTA with ASEAN by March

India hopes to conclude a free trade agreement with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) by March and implement it by January 2009, a top government official said on Wednesday.

NEW DELHI: India hopes to conclude a free trade agreement with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) by March and implement it by January 2009, a top government official said on Wednesday.

"We hope by March we will conclude ASEAN negotiations. You will get tariff down on 73 percent of (tradeable) items. It will come into effect by January 2009," India's Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai told reporters.

He said similar trade pacts with the European Union, South Korea and Japan were being negotiated and India hopes to conclude these by the end of 2009.
