India, Russia bilateral trade to touch $200 mn
The Chelyabinsk region of Russia is expecting its trade with India to touch 200 million dollars in 2008 from about 140 million dollars a year ago as it seeks more cooperation in metallurgical sector with the country.
"India is a very important partner for trade and economic relations with the Chelyabinsk region. Last year, about 140 million dollar trade happened between the region and India. This year, we are expecting it to touch 200 million dollars," World Trade Centre (Chelyabinsk) Chief Executive Tatiana Grekhova told PTI on the sidelines of an Assocham meet here.
Coinciding with the Russian Prime Minister Victor Zubkov's maiden visit to India, an independent business delegation from the Chelyabinsk region has come to the country to explore bilateral trade opportunities in different sectors.
She said the region is the metallurgical centre of Russia and the focus of the visiting delegation would be to increase cooperation and investments in the sector.
"We are also looking at other areas like tubes and investments in construction. I am hopeful that the firms (from the region) will get partners for joint ventures and future businesses in this visit," Grekhova said.
Currently, bilateral trade happens in areas like iron and steel, chemical and pharmaceutical products and equipments for Uraltrak tractor plant.
Assocham and the World Trade Centre, Chelyabinsk, on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote economic and trade ties between the industries of the two countries.
The current bilateral trade between India and Russia stands at four billion dollars and is expected to touch 10 billion dollars by 2010.
