India lifts ban on import of non-Basmati rice to Bangladesh

In a humanitarian gesture, India has lifted the ban on export of non-Basmati rice priced below $400 per tonne to the cyclone-hit Bangladesh.

KAMPALA: In a humanitarian gesture, India has lifted the ban on export of non-Basmati rice priced below $400 per tonne to the cyclone-hit Bangladesh.

The ban, imposed last month in view of rising prices of non-Basmati rice in the Indian market, was lifted only in the case of Bangladesh to help the survivors of the worst cyclone in the century which devastated the Southeastern coastlines of that country leaving over 3,200 people dead.

India has also told Bangladesh about its willingness to work on a longer term plan for rehabilitation of the cyclone-affected people.

This was conveyed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to his Bangladeshi counterpart Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury during a meeting here last evening.

India would fly a second plane load of medicines and tents to Bangladesh to distribution in cyclone-ravaged areas.

Chowdhury expressed gratitude for the assistance extended by India to his country.

During the more than hour-long meeting, the two leaders spent most of the time on after effects of the cyclone Sidr and what assistance India could extend. They also discussed ways to move forward bilateral ties.

Bangladesh is taking action against some Indian criminals and insurgents sheltered in that country, officials here said.

Mukherjee and Chowdhury will meet again when SAARC Foreign Ministers meet in Delhi for two days from December 7. This ministerial meeting of the regional grouping will be preceded by a meeting of Foreign Secretaries of the eight member-countries.
