India restricts clear float glass imports to curb cheaper shipments

New Delhi: India has imposed a minimum import price of Rs 34,000 per metric tonne on clear float glass for one year, a move that could benefit domestic producers, including Saint-Gobain and Asahi India, by curbing lower-priced imports.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade, in a notification dated August 18, changed the import policy for clear float glass of 4 mm to 12 mm thickness under ITC (HS) codes 70051090 and 70052990 from "Free" to "Restricted."

Imports priced at or above Rs 34,000 per tonne on a CIF basis will continue to be permitted, while shipments below the threshold will face the new restriction.

The minimum import price will remain in force for one year from the date of publication of the notification, according to the DGFT.

Imports by Advance Authorisation holders, Export Oriented Units and units in Special Economic Zones are exempt, provided the imported material is not subsequently sold into the Domestic Tariff Area.

The measure covers two categories of non-wired clear float glass under Chapter 70 of India's import policy.

The policy change introduces a price floor rather than an outright ban on imports and is expected to primarily affect lower-priced shipments entering the Indian market below the prescribed benchmark.

The new policy takes effect under DGFT Notification No. 29/2026-27 dated August 18, 2026.
