India is eyeing Japan for marketing various spices products.

KOCHI: India is eyeing Japan for marketing various spices products.

Problems of agri chemcial residues and the difficulties in exporting spices like fresh ginger, chillies, garlic, currently experienced by China are throwing up opportunities for expanding Indian exports of these products to Japan, spices board sources here said.

To make use of such opportunities, the board showcased the Indian spices at the Foodex 2008 in Tokyo from Mar 11 to 14.

The Indian pavilon displayed products, including whole spices, oils and oleoresins, masalas, mixes, curry powders and herbs, from over 20 Indian exporters, the sources said.

Diversified activities at the stand attracted large number of visitors. Besides, the wide range of product on display, brochures were distributed and a cooking demonstration in association with M/S Maple Foods of Japan was also held.

Visitors were given opportunities to taste chicken, mutton, fish and vegetable curries along with Kerala 'parottas'.

The sources said Indian food is generally sought after in Japan and most of the major hotel chains are showing keen interst for promoting and introducing south Indian food.

The preference is mainly due to spices which goes as a major ingridient.

The board was planning to organise more food promotions in Japan during the current year.

Spices Boad Chairman V J Kurien and Director (Marketing), S Kannan, held discussions with top officials at the pavillion, the sources said.

For the first time, the board also undertook a promotional programme in the North African maket of Morocco.
