India exported 51.02 lakh tons of non-basmati rice till January
India, the second largest rice producer in the world, exported 51.02 lakh tons of non-basmati rice as on January 26.
"The total quantum of non-basmati rice exported during 2007-08 up to January 26 is 51.02 lakh tons," Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jairam Ramesh told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The government had imposed ban on non-basmati rice in October 2007. However, it was later lifted by fixing a minimum export price (MEP), which is currently ruling at 650 dollar per tonne, he said.
"In 2007-08, the export of rice has been sought to be restricted through introduction of MEP and port restrictions," the minister said.
Highlighting the difference in MEP set in other countries, he said the average domestic export price during October 2007 was fixed at 384.47 dollar per ton. While, MEP during the same period in the US were ruling at 495 dollar per ton, in Pakistan at 370 dollar per tonne and in Thailand at 351 dollar per ton, he said.
Asked if any incentives given to promote rice exports, Ramesh said the government, in general, has been promoting exports of rice directly and through statutory bodies like Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
"In order to boost exports, the government provides various incentives through APEDA for infrastructure, development, quality control, market development and promotion," he added.
