India, China, US join hands to push plastic trade in a big way

The leading plastics industry associations of India, China and US have decided to get together to promote plastic goods consumption.

KOLKATA: The leading plastics industry associations of India, China and US have decided to get together to promote plastic goods consumption.

Working towards this, India’s Plastic Export Promotion Council (Plexconcil), the US-based Society for Plastics (SPI) and the China Plastics Processing Machine Industry Association have set up a common promotional forum christened, Global United Plastics Association (Gupa).

The forum has been launched to popularise plastic goods usage across the world. The objective is to raise the demand for plastic goods across the globe, which in turn, will help Gupa members to increase exports.

While popularising plastics consumption, consideration will be given to address environmental issues linked to plastics goods manufacturing technology. The idea of a joint initiative in plastic goods exports was mooted at the recently held international exhibition on plastic goods, held at Taizon province in China.

The first meeting of the consortium will be held in early November, coinciding with the forthcoming Indplas-’06 exhibition on plastic goods, which will be held in early November in Kolkata.

The exhibition, inviting participation from plastic goods units from across the world, will be jointly organised by Indian Plastic Federation, Indoplast Foundation and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC).

The meeting is expected to draw up an action plan and decide on where to locate its headquarters. “Gupa’s prime objective is to leverage the three countries’ collective expertise and database on polymer technology, with a view to promote plastics industry domestically and globally.

This apart, it will also work to promote green technology in polymer processing and green management in the disposal of plastic waste,” said RC Lohia, chairman, Plexconcil.

Apart from serving as an interactive platform among the three associations, it will also offer opportunities to companies of one country to forge joint ventures or to have technical tie-ups with those from other countries through their respective national associations, said Mr Lohia.
