India on Wednesday allowed an additional 10,000 tonnes of onion exports to the UAE through the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL), according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Last month, the government permitted shipments of 14,400 tonnes to the emirates even as it extended a ban on onion exports till further orders, which was initially enforced from December 8, 2023 till March 31, 2024.

“Exports of additional 10,000 tonnes of onions... to UAE through NCEL over and above the quota notified vide DGFT notification...dated March 1, 2024, is allowed,” the DGFT said.

Though onion exports are banned, the government allows specified quantities to friendly nations and on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries based on their request.

Onions worth $431.78 million were exported during April-January FY24 with $187.5 million shipped to Bangladesh and $48.12 million to Sri Lanka.
