Import of 350 sensitive items down 16% in April

Imports of nearly 350 sensitive commodities, monitored by the commerce ministry, have declined by 15.8% in April compared to imports in April 2006.

NEW DELHI: Imports of nearly 350 sensitive commodities, monitored by the commerce ministry, have declined by 15.8% in April compared to imports in April 2006.

Products that saw a decline include edible oil, cotton & silk, fruit & vegetables (including nuts), products made by the small-scale industry (SSI), spices and marble & granite. However, imports of automobiles, rubber, alcoholic beverages and milk & milk products have shown an increase.

The government carries out monthly monitoring of imports of the identified sensitive products since a sharp increase in the arrival of such items could destabilise the domestic industry.

According to an official release, the total import of sensitive items for April stood at Rs 1,118 crore, compared to Rs 1,328 crore in April 2006. While imports of sensitive items constituted 10.6% of gross imports in April 2006, their share shrank to 6.3% in April this year.

In the edible oils segment, imports fell from Rs 810 crore in April 2006 to Rs 625 crore in April this year. Imports of crude and refined oil fell by 23% and 21.1%, respectively. The fall in edible oil imports is mainly due to a sharp decrease in imports of soyabean oil and its fractions (crude), which fell by 62%.

Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, Thailand, Germany, Japan, Pakistan, Bhutan and the United Arab Emirates have gone up while arrivals from Argentina, China, the US, Malaysia, Egypt and Sri Lanka have shown a decrease.
