Gulf welcomes India move on non-basmati exports

Hit by shortage of rice in the domestic market, residents of Gulf countries, especially the five million Indian expatriates, have heaved a sigh of relief at the move by New Delhi to relax non-Basmati rice exports.

DUBAI: Hit by shortage of rice in the domestic market, residents of Gulf countries, especially the five million Indian expatriates, have heaved a sigh of relief at the move by New Delhi to relax non-Basmati rice exports.

The India government today lifted the ban on export of superior quality non-basmati rice priced over $425 a ton.

The Indian government had on October 9 banned export of all non-basmati rice to augment domestic stocks.

Kamal Vachani, Director of Al Maya group, which runs chain of supermarkets across the Gulf and is a major rice importer from all over the world, welcomed the lifting of the ban, saying that the move will allow only better qualities of rice to be exported, ensuring good supplies to the consumers in the Gulf.

Earlier, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries faced a shortage after India, which supplies a major chunk, imposed a ban on exporting non-basmati variety.

Prices of non-basmati rice were up due to the shortage of the Indian varieties following the ban.

A leading UAE businessman M A Yusuffali had written to the Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath highlighting the plight of NRIs in the Gulf, following the rice ban.

Yusufali runs Lulu supermarkets across the Gulf countries and is a major importer of rice.

He pointed out that the majority of Indians living in the region are dependent on non-basmati rice and the government ban will deprive them of their staple diet.
