Government allows additional sugar export of over 4,000 tonnes to US

The government today allowed export of an additional quantity of 4,476 tonnes of sugar to the US in the current marketing year ending September 2012.

NEW DELHI: The government today allowed export of an additional quantity of 4,476 tonnes of sugar to the US in the current marketing year ending September 2012.

Earlier, India had shipped 8,300 tonnes of raw sugar to the US under the preferential quota arrangements.

"Additional quantity of 4,476 tonnes of raw sugar is permitted to be exported to the US," Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a public notice.

India has a 'preferential quota' arrangement for sugar export with the European Union as well.

Due to higher production, the government has permitted export of 3 million tonnes of sugar in the current marketing year.

The country is estimated to produce 26 million tonnes of sugar in the 2011-12 marketing year (October-September) against the annual demand of 22 million tonnes.
