India is considering creating a railway container freight station near its border with Pakistan at Attari.

ATTARI: India is considering creating a railway container freight station near its border with Pakistan at Attari.

"We have written to the Central Board of Excise and Customs ( CBEC) saying that there is a demand for container trade through the Attari border. We have suggested setting up of a dry port somewhere near integrated check post at Attari," customs commissioner ( Amritsar) KK Sharma said. "The finance ministry has taken up the matter with the commerce ministry," he added.

Trade with Pakistan through the Attari border is largely through trucks, though a train link exists. India's exports to Pakistan through this route witnessed a jump of 54% at Rs 1,237 crore in the April-December period while imports jumped 87% to Rs 630 crore.
