First tariff-free Scottish salmon shipment arrives in Bengaluru under UK-India CETA

Bengaluru: The first tariff-free shipment of Scottish salmon has arrived in India through Bengaluru under the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), marking one of the earliest commercial outcomes of the trade pact that came into force on July 15.

The consignment of fresh farmed Scottish salmon, produced by Bakkafrost and imported by Bengaluru-based Sashimi Foods Private Limited, reached India barely two weeks after the agreement became operational.

Under the CETA, India has removed the earlier 33% import tariff on Scottish salmon, improving market access for UK exporters while making premium imported seafood more competitively priced for Indian consumers.


The arrival of the shipment was marked at an event attended by Owen Richards, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission in Bengaluru, along with representatives of Sashimi Foods.

"The arrival of the first tariff-free shipment of Scottish salmon in Bengaluru demonstrates the practical benefits of the UK-India CETA. Within weeks of the agreement taking effect, businesses are already benefiting from lower trade barriers and improved market access," Richards said.

He added that the shipment reflects the growing UK-India economic partnership and showcases how the trade agreement is creating opportunities for exporters, importers and consumers.

Scottish salmon is the UK's largest food export and is widely recognised for its quality, sustainability and traceability. Industry estimates indicate that the UK-India CETA could create up to £130 million in additional export opportunities for Scotland's salmon industry over the next decade.

Kedarnath Reddy, CEO and Managing Director of Sashimi Foods, said the removal of tariffs has enabled the company to import premium Scottish salmon at more competitive prices, supporting its plans to expand the availability of sustainably sourced seafood in India.
The shipment underscores the growing commercial ties between the UK and India and highlights the opportunities created by the trade agreement across sectors, including food and beverages.
