NEW DELHI: Industry body FICCI is taking an initiative to hold consultations with industry and trade representatives in northern states on a Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BITA) that India is negotiating with the European Union.

India and the European Communities have recently launched negotiations for BITA, which would involve mutual opening of markets for goods, services and investment at zero import duty for substantial amount of trade.

Ficci in association with the Department of Commerce and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is organising a workshop on September 5.

The event would be attended by representatives of state governments, consumer organisations, industry, experts and policy makers from Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal, the chamber said in a statement.

Participation is expected to be comprehensive, including from stakeholders from areas like agricultural, fish, chemicals and allied products, raw hides and skin, paper and paper board, plastics and rubber, footwear, glass and ceramic products, textiles and clothing, electrical machinery and parts, it said.
