EPCH to set up integrated marketing project in Orissa

BHUBANESWAR: Attracted by the demand for Orissa's tribal crafts and jewellery abroad, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) has envinced interest to set up an integrated marketing project at an invest of Rs 100 crore in the state, official sources said.
EPCH Executive Director R Kumar met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at New Delhi yesterday and expressed his organisation's interest in the proposed project for development and promotion of handicraft and handloom of Orissa with a special focus on tribal crafts, they said.
The project, sources said, would include various components like human resource development, design and product development.
"Besides, the project also proposed to set up two art and craft complex at Bhubaneswar and Puri," an official said adding it also proposed to open a show room abroad.
The project would be an integrated one and executed in a phased manner by special purpose vehicle (SPV) of EPCH and infrastracture leasing financial service, he said.
According to an official release issued by the chief minister's office here, the project was expected to create employment opportunity for three lakh families.
During discussion, Patnaik informed Kumar that Orissa's weavers and artisans had goot deep root in tradition and culture of the state.
Besides tribal crafts and jewellery, the state had a rich tradition of Dokra casting, silver filigree work and other metal work, terra cotta, wood work, applique worrk, horn work, golden grass work, cane and bamboo products.
