EEPC targets $23 bn exports in ‘06-07

KOLKATA: The Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), the apex body for engineering exports, is targeting to touch $23 billion in exports during the current financial year.
EEPC Chairman Rakesh Shah told reporters today that witnessing the buoyancy in exports, it was expected that there were would be 20 per cent growth in 2006-07.
Last year, engineering exports were $19.18 billion.
Shah said this projection was in line with the government's vision to achieve a target of $ 125 billion for overall merchandise exports during the fiscal 2006-07.
During April 2006, engineering exports touched $ 1.99 billion, which was higher by 35.6 per cent over the same month previous fiscal.
EEPC estimates showed that in the first quarter of 2006-07, exports were $ 5.5 billion, which was 25 per cent higher over the previous fiscal.
The principal items of engineering exports were machinery and instruments, transport equipment, machine tools, manufacture of metals, and ferro alloys among others.
EEPC had suggested that the government should also take some steps for smooth implementation of the foreign trade policy.
Shah said that service tax on all post-production related services should be withdrawn.
