Edible oils, rubber imports bounce high

The import of sensitive items during the period amounted to Rs 18,702 crore, up from Rs 16,726 crore during the corresponding period last year.

NEW DELHI: Imports of about 350 sensitive products monitored by the commerce department rose 11.8% in April-November. Notably, there was a sharp spike in the import of edible oil, automobiles, rubber, tea & coffee and alcoholic beverages. The import of sensitive items during the period amounted to Rs 18,702 crore, up from Rs 16,726 crore during the corresponding period last year.

Import of automobiles almost doubled from Rs 391.14 crore in the first eight months of 2006-07 to Rs 744.67 crore in the comparable period of the current fiscal. Import of refined edible oil rose 15.8% to Rs 902.36 crore while crude edible oil increased by 9.1% to Rs 7,121.5 crore.

Alcohol imports rose 18.8% to Rs 150.49 crore over a high base largely due to a cut in Customs duties. Rubber imports escalated by 65.2% to Rs 537.52 crore. Tea & coffee imports increased 58.7% during the period to Rs 101.38 crore.

A decline was witnessed in the imports of spices, marble & granite and milk & milk products during the period. Import of sensitive items from Indonesia, Canada, China, the US, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Germany, Thailand, Japan and Guinea Bissau have gone up while those from Argentina, Myanmar, Russia, Malaysia, Cote D’ Ivoire, Australia and Benin have shown a decrease.
