NEW DELHI:What should India do to gain market access in the CIS countries and attract investments from this region? Simple, appoint dreamgirl Hemamalini as the Indian ambassador to this region.

In terms of popularity, she beats the rest of India hands down, Mr Jairam Ramesh, minister of state for commerce, learnt on Friday.

The deputy foreign minister of Kyrgyz Republic, Mr Kadyrbek Sarbaev, had come to Udyog Bhavan for a meeting with Mr Ramesh on trade and investment. As discussions touched upon cultural ties, Mr Sarbaev mentioned about the popularity of Bollywood flicks in Kyrgyz Republic. Aawaara, Bobby and Seeta aur Geeta, were some of the movies that the minister Kyrgyz remembered.

Mr Ramesh immediately dialled Hemamalini, now a Rajya Sabha MP, who had starred in the legendary double role as Seeta and Geeta. As the dreamgirl came on the line, Mr Ramesh urged her to speak to the Kyrgyz minister. Mr Sarbaev, Udyog Bhavan insiders say was pleased as punch and immediately extended the Bollywood star an invitation to visit his country.

Mr Sarbaev is not the only CIS fan of Hemamalini, from the VIP category that is. According to Mr Ramesh, the commerce minister of Uzbekistan is also an admirer of the dreamgirl, especially her double role in Seeta aur Geeta. The gentlemen himself had, during a visit to India three months ago, mentioned this to Mr Ramesh.

With Udyog Bhavan getting pretty impressed with Hema’s brand equity in the CIS, it might be time for the ministry of external affairs to find ways to leverage the dreamgirl’s popularity to boost bilateral ties! Since trade liberalisation negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) have come to a standstill, the Bollywood brigade could turn into trade envoys opening up new markets for India.
