Conference to discuss trade issues between India, Sri Lanka
Trade and investment related issues between India and Sri lanka will come up for discussion at a conference in Chennai tomorrow.
Sri Lanka Minister for International Trade G L Peiris will inaugurate the two-day conference being organised by Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in association with industry chamber CII and Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission.
After signing of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Sri Lanka, the bilateral trade has more than doubled in just three years to 2722.79 million dollar in 2007 from 557 million dollar in 1999, a statement from ORF said here.
Both the countries have been receiving large investments from private companies and there was a potential to increase the same, it said.
There have some worries from the part of India that the FTA is being misused by traders around the world by routing their consignments through Sri Lanka, the statement added.
