Coffee exports rises by 6 pc

NEW DELHI: India's coffee exports have shot up by 6 per cent to 1.66 lakh tons in the first eight months of this year on the back of significant rise in re-exports of value-added coffee products, according to the Coffee Board.

The total provisional exports of coffee between January 1 and August 29, including re-exports, stood at 1.66 lakh tons, compared with 1.57 lakh tons in the year-ago period.

The provisional re-export of coffee has almost doubled to 16,238 tons during the period from 8,722 tons in the corresponding months last year, pushing up the total exports. Re-exports refer to the imported coffee components which get exported after value addition in the country.

"Traders are resorting to more and more re-exports of coffee mainly due to higher prices of value-added products in global markets," a senior Coffee Board official said.

The provisional exports of coffee till August 29 this year have inched up to 1.50 lakh tons against 1.48 lakh tons in the period under review last year, the Board said.
