Chillies’ exports spice it up for the big basket
Spices export may surpass the current year target of Rs 3,600 crore riding on the increased offtake of chillies, pepper, fenugreek and other spices.
The spices exports came to 1, 87,000 tonne valued at 1,725.08 crore against 1,49,000 tonne valued at 1,290 crore in April-August period in 2006-07. In dollar terms the increase is 50%. The five months’ export has already achieved 49% of the quantity and 48% of value of the target. Buoyed by the rise in unit price and increased demand in the global market, pepper export at 12,900 tonnes valued at Rs 183.39 crore showed 31% increase in quantity and 124% increase in value, making it the spice showing the largest value increase in export.
The unit value of pepper touched Rs 142.17 per kg. It was Rs 83.21 per kg in the same period of the previous year. The chilli exports, Spices Board sources said, has surged with mounting purchase by the South East Asian countries. A total of 88,000 tonne valued at Rs 487 crore was exported. This represented 86% rise in quantity and 116% increase in value.,Fenugreek is another spice with rising export.
At 6350 tonne valued at Rs 17.22 crore, fenugreek export shot up by 89% in quantity and 70 % in value. Coriander, fennel, large cardamom, mint products, spice oils and oleoresins, other spices have all shown a rise. The quantity of exports of turmeric and ginger has gone up but in terms of value there is a decline with a decrease in unit value.
Prominent among the under performers are garlic and cumin. According to sources, shortage of garlic has led to considerably lower export. At 295 tonnes valued at Rs 1.79 crore, it has shown 97% decline in quantity and 90% fall in value. Cumin export, despite a rise in unit value to Rs 106.41 per kg, fell by 45% in quantity and 17% in value at 7450 tonne worth Rs 79.27 crore.
