Bouquet & brickbats from trade bodies
The policy measures announced have failed to enthuse the trade bodies who have demanded more benefits.
FIEO has also appealed to the government for early formulation of the scheme for rebating state levies as exporters are heavily burdened with taxes and duties. Similar views have been expressed by the Delhi Exporters Association. The association president SP Agarwal said that policy has nothing to offer to units in domestic tariff area which employ more than 1.5 lakh people.
Trade and industry bodies also feel that the trade target set would be difficult to achieve. Assocham president Venugopal Dhoot said, The government is unlikely to achieve 2007-08 export target of $160 billion. We expect only 15-16% of exports target growth in current fiscal, which in realistic view should not be more than $170 billion.
The house is, however, divided with two other leading chambers FICCI and CII feeling that the policy would give a significant push to exports of manufactured goods, and also provide much-needed fillip to agricultural and labour-intensive exports from the country. The new measures will be vital for modernization of the manufacturing sector and accelerating exports. Extension of DEPB scheme and I-T benefits for 100% EOUs are welcome steps, FICCI observed.
