Border trade will improve Arunachal's economy: Ramesh

The opening of border trade with neighbouring countries would improve the economy of Arunachal Pradesh, says Union Minister of State for Trade and Commerce Jairam Ramesh.

ITANAGAR/JAIRAMPUR: The opening of border trade with neighbouring countries would improve the economy of Arunachal Pradesh, Union Minister of State for Trade and Commerce Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said.

Talking to newspersons here after returning from Nampong after inaugurating the Border Trade Centre there during the day, he said Rs 2.5 crore was sanctioned for development of the BTC and the area.

A Rs 175 crore proposal for comprehensive development of Pagsau Pass, BTC and Nampong town was submitted to him earlier in the day, which he said would be considered.

Addressing a gathering at Nampong, Ramesh said the opening of border trade with neighbouring countries would upgrade the stagnant economy of the district in particular and the state in general.

He said Moreh in Manipur was the only BTC along the 1,600 km Indo-Myanmar border. "Talks are on with the Myanmar government, including its proposal to build road from Pagsauto Tannai, 60 km within Myanmar, to make the Nampong BTC functional," he said.

Timber industries will also be an important component of border trade as Myanmar has huge quantity of forest reserves that can be imported to feed the sick industries of the district.

He also stressed on cultural exchange between the two countries. "Culture and tradition transcends all barriers and will solidify the relationship of the two nations," he added.
