Bhutan appoints Indian distributor for its paper lottery

The Coimbatore-based Martin Lottery Agencies Ltd will be the Bhutanese lottery agent for five years from January 1, 2008 after they beat two Indian companies -- Sanjay Jayantilal & Company and Krishna Agency -- who were in the race.

THIMPHU: India's leading lottery company has been named the marketing agent for the Bhutan paper lottery in both the countries.

The Coimbatore-based Martin Lottery Agencies Ltd (MLAL) will be the Bhutanese lottery agent for five years from January 1, 2008 after they beat two Indian companies -- Sanjay Jayantilal & Company and Krishna Agency -- who were in the race.

MLAL had made the highest offer, according to finance ministry officials of Bhutan.

But the fellow bidders accused that MLAL had over 60 criminal charges in India.

However, MLAL's managing director Santiago Martin, said the ministry had thoroughly assessed the company and found "the allegations were made because of business rivalry".

Martin said though there were ongoing cases against the company but nobody has been convicted or found guilty.

"These were allegations and they will be cleared in due course of time," the state-run Kuensel quoted him as saying.

MLAL have been in lottery business in the Himalayan nation for the past 15 years through the former distributor Sanjay Jayantilal & Company whose term will expire on December 31 after being agents for 25 years.

According to Martin, Bhutan paper lottery has a huge market in West Bengal and Kerala.
